What Is the Difference Between a Dermatologist and a Dermatopathologist?
March 6, 2026
A dermatologist and a dermatopathologist both play important roles in diagnosing and managing skin diseases, but their areas of expertise are different. Understanding the difference can help patients know which specialist they may need for a particular skin concern.
A dermatologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Common concerns such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, allergies, pigmentation, hair loss, warts, and other skin disorders are evaluated clinically by a dermatologist. Dermatologists may use tools such as dermoscopy, along with medical history and physical examination, to understand a patient's condition and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
