What Is Dermatopathology? Understanding Skin Disease Diagnosis
March 6, 2026
Dermatopathology is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing skin diseases by examining skin tissue under a microscope. While many skin conditions can be identified through a clinical examination, some may look similar on the surface and require a more detailed evaluation. This is where dermatopathology plays an important role.
Dermatopathology connects clinical dermatology with laboratory-based diagnosis. When a dermatologist identifies a skin lesion, rash, growth, or other unusual change that needs further investigation, a skin biopsy may be recommended. During a biopsy, a small sample of affected skin is collected and sent for histopathological examination. A dermatopathologist then carefully studies the tissue to identify changes in the skin cells and tissues.
